Do your students struggle with handwriting skills or fine motor tasks? Then these are MUST HAVE centers in your classroom! Despite your grade levels, these centers can be tailored to meet the varying skills of students from PreK-12th grade.

The concept is based on TEACCH 3 task work system. You can address this in many ways. But one thing that you want, is to put either skills that they have mastered or skills that the student can complete INDEPENDENTLY! :)
This year, I went with cowboy theme! :)
I looped with my students from last year and I had some additions. A total of 12 students!! Crazy! I had a higher functioning group, therefore things were a little more challenging. As well... I moved rooms to have a Promethean board. Woooohoo!! Outside Bulletin Boards When I started books and listening were separate centers, however I changed students so I combined the two together.
Books/Listening Center: Students will listen to books on tape/cd and complete a worksheet on the story. It can be as simple as" -I like the story :) I don't like the story :(. Draw a picture -Answer comprehension questions -A fill in the blank story... student cant find the missing words or listen to the missing words. -After they complete, they can read books. This year I had safari/jungle theme! :) Behavior System
This was my first year doing this, but it worked like magic. Everyday a student stayed on green they got a sticker. Break area was closed and could only be earned if they earned 5 stickers. Once they complete the incentive chart with 25 stickers, they got to go to the treasure box. My students HATED changing their color, even if it was to yellow... it was like their world was falling apart. Although I had a higher functioning group, my co worker tried it with her lower functioning and it worked as well. She varied it by reinforcing with small rewards for every green. :) This year I was out for three months for medical reasons, and I came in October.
The autism coach (this was her old class), she set up everything and left everything. It was my first year in an ASD Class, and I had never worked in a self contained class. It was definitely a learning experience. I knew nothing.. I learned on the spot. Lucky me I had a great team of people guiding me!! :) So these pics shows her set up, and some tiny changes I added once I took over. I love her for doing this for me... but I still ended up making MY OWN. :) This year it was Hollywood Theme.... :)
Remember, you must label each center. Morning Work I started with trapezoid tables, then I changed it to desk... since I had 7 students... I couldn't take having a different desk at the end... A little OCD... :) You will learn that every class and teacher are different.
I have changed my classroom set up within the 4 years I have been working every time! I will be posting pictures of each year for you to see how the class was set up. Later on, I will get into details on how each center works. I will have to update with more pics later on since I only have pictures I took but never with the purpose of creating a blog. |
